Photo: Conxa Rod\u00e0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our team at the National Museum have been active in several ways in this edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/\">Museums and the Web<\/a>, held in Cleveland from 19<sup>th<\/sup> to 22 April: being part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/committees\/\">program<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/committees\/\"> Committee<\/a>, members of the Jury of the Awards and giving 2 presentations: a 3-hours workshop on content strategy and a presentation of our participatory project <em>Unique Visitors<\/em> (more details below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The richness and density of content, sessions and networking make, as usual, any summary complicated, and surely incomplete. I dare share some of the trends that are now much alive in museums, together with relevant links. As usual also, I strongly recommend browsing the <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Museums and the Web program<\/a> for full access to keynotes and sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for numbers, Museums and the Web attracted 450 participants from 25 countries. More than 150 papers and sessions were held and more than 1,000 #MW17 tweets published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Accessibility <\/strong>is still a challenge for most museums. As internationally recognised expert Sina Bahram said on the opening session, inclusion can not be a day-two-problem on projects, should be included from the very beginning. One of the many novelties of #MW17 was the <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/session\/accessibility-incubator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inclusive design incubator<\/a> where projects could be presented to get advice on accessibility. Sina reminded attendees to describe images on tweets to make them accessible: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.twitter.com\/articles\/20174660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Making images accessible for people on Twitter<\/a>.<br \/>A new <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/proposal\/community-of-practice-accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community of Practice on Accessibility<\/a> was launched.<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/SinaBahram_keynote_MW17.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/SinaBahram_keynote_MW17.jpg\" alt=\"Sina Bahram\u2019s opening keynote at #MW17. If we are to tailor museum content and experience we need to know more about our audiences. Content is really the key to make collections more accessible, attract new audiences, improve the experience and quality of the visit.&nbsp;To appeal to our users, we deploy a diversity of platforms and channels. Then, <strong>the more we spread our content into a variety of channels and platforms, the more a solid Content Strategy is needed<\/strong> if we are to provide meaningful, consistent, user-oriented content through better processes of content planning, creation and governance. A new <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/proposal\/community-of-practice-immersive-storytelling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community of practice<\/a> has been launched around immersive storytelling.&nbsp;Interactive storytelling experiences enhanced by the highest quality images were shared by Madpixel, the creators of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secondcanvas.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Second Canvas<\/a> platform.<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is still room for <strong>museum apps<\/strong>. In spite the overwhelming amount of apps and the increasing reluctance of users to download still one more app for a museum visit, reality proves that, if well done, easy accessible and providing added-value, visitors enjoy and engage with museum content via apps. The project is pivoting around the idea of \u201cTell a story, no <em>the<\/em> story\u201d (yes, really, no need to try to explain everything we know about our collection!). Proof of the effectiveness of this approach is that their \u2018ImmersiveWalk\u2019 of 45 minutes is the most popular part of the app and is completed by 75% of their users.<br \/>It was on this session that together with Ana Basso, we presented the participatory web and app Unique Visitors. This is a joint project run by our museum and the start up that has proved valuable for our users to establish connections with the collection. So far, more than 100 routes have been created by our users, thus providing a more direct and fresh approach to the artworks. Sometimes the info you get in the app doesn\u2019t accurately present the one you\u2019re expecting related to where you are in the museum which may cause frustration.<br \/>These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evernote.com\/shard\/s271\/sh\/7da3e95a-0b08-4a86-8a88-b49a127b3688\/2bbd54e49bfd57cad1597e5b0404cf25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes of the session<\/a> were accurately taken and shared by Miranda Kerr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital strategy<\/strong> still needed: although the optimal is to have it embedded in the global museum strategy, there was a general agreement that for <strong>now there is still a need of advocacy for making digital part of the projects from the very beginning<\/strong>. Strategy is needed&nbsp;also to build a clear path to guide the organisations\u2019 digital transformation. An alive session, \u2018Strategy 3.0\u2019, was held to discuss digital strategy meaning today. The panellists will soon publish a paper collecting the collective inputs. Many sessions were dedicated this year to data analytics and big data. A Professional Forum <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/proposal\/big-data-and-analytics-what-weve-learned-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big data and analytics: what we\u2019ve learned so far<\/a> was conducted by Angie Judge from Dexibit, Rob Stein from AAM and others:&nbsp; \u201cbig data and analytics are impacting crucial museum outcomes. As much a cultural change as a technological challenge, this strategic imperative is driving a substantial shift for the cultural sector, from gut feel to data driven decisions\u201d.<br \/>Collecting data in an integrated way and analyzing them will provide us with knolewdgeable insights to improve museums\u2019 performance. On top of clear visualisation, it is recommended to tell a story with data.<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Virtual Reality<\/strong> is flourishing but has still a long way to go. More and more new initiatives arise. The wow effect is almost always ensured. For most projects, though, depth in content and memorable experience are next steps to be achieved. During the <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/proposal\/mapping-the-territory-of-virtual-reality\/\">Mapping the VR Territory<\/a> session, it was clear that it offers a new type of visitor engagement full of potential.&nbsp;The technology is there, prices are going down, usability is slowly improving. The VR that can be also experienced outside the site, has been complemented with an immersive room onsite.<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Young audiences<br \/><\/strong>Several sessions and projects were focused on this high-priority segment.<br \/>To name a few:<br \/>&#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/glami\/journeymaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journey Maker<\/a> by the Art Institute of Chicago, that offers a nice hybridation digital\/physical experience. Young visitors can build their own journey on a multitouch table, and then visit the galleries following their selection.\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zRygX7VI3Bo?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure><div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><\/div>\n<p>Video <em>Journey Maker<\/em> at the Art Institute of Chicago<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/proposal\/developing-visual-literacy-programming-for-very-young-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visual literacy<\/a> (VL) program, developed by the Pratt Institute, shared the results of a study based on 3-5 year olds, covering the basic VL elements: color, line, shape and texture.<br \/>&#8211; Teens and Social Media are a perfect match. The <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/proposal\/teenscan-let-teens-be-your-social-media-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">project #TeensCan: Let Teens Be Your Social Media Voice<\/a>, presented by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, launched \u201cby teens, for teens\u201d social media accounts. An excellent way to engage teens with the museum and also involve them in helping the new teams of peers.<br \/>&#8211; Also for teens, an app by the Kimbell Museum of Arts was presented:&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/proposal\/7-way-to-engage-teens-at-your-museum-p-s-it-aint-just-about-snapchat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">7 Way To Engage Teens At Your Museum (p.s. it ain\u2019t just about Snapchat)<\/a>.<br \/>&#8211; On the schools field, a winner project was <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/glami\/museum-at-your-fingertips-telepresence-tours-for-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Museum at Your Fingertips: Telepresence Tours for Schools<\/a> by the Balboa Park, to test the ability of a telepresence robot to provide remote tours for classrooms. Students\u2019 observation and tests were conducted. &nbsp;It turned out that combining the robot with a museum educator interaction resulted in a better experience.<br \/>&#8211; The Van Gogh Museum presented the Van Gogh at school online platform, addressed to primary school teachers.<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open <\/strong>is the way. \u201cOpen by default\u201d is an aspiration for many, to provide open access to research and information assets, to foster new knowledge, to encourage participation. I always defend that, at least for public-funded museums, <strong>open content is a museum\u2019s duty and a public\u2019s right<\/strong>. To embrace openness often means a deep organisational change.<br \/>The published MW paper <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/paper\/open-innovation-open-movements-and-the-role-of-a-museum-in-the-21st-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open innovation: Open movements and the role of a museum in the 21st century<\/a> covers all aspects, from open source, open data, open participation, to open hardware. It provides a thorough overview and contains a useful chart to a<strong>ssess the effectiveness of open initiatives in museums.<br \/><\/strong>Among the excellent museum examples on open data out there to follow there are: <a href=\"https:\/\/openglam.org\/2013\/02\/27\/case-study-rijksmuseum-releases-111-000-high-quality-images-to-the-public-domain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rijksmuseum<\/a> in Amsterdam, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/smk-open\">SMK<\/a> (Statens Musem for Kunst in Denmark), <a href=\"http:\/\/sammlungonline.mkg-hamburg.de\/en\/termsandconditions\">Museum f\u00fcr Kunst und Gewerbe<\/a> in Hamburg, Germany, or the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/2017\/02\/07\/met-announcement\/\">MET open images release<\/a> to name a few.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a coincidence that, during MW, the <a href=\"https:\/\/openglam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">openGLAM<\/a> sector was mobilised for a conference in Hamburg, Germany, organised by the Museum f\u00fcr Kunst und Gewerbe&nbsp;and the University of Hamburg and led by Antje Schmidt and Gertraud Koch around openness: \u201cSharing is caring\u201d. The opening keynote by Merete Sanderhoff is available online: <a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MereteSanderhoff\/how-starting-small-can-change-the-museum-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How starting small can change the (museum) world<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">. And here the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@_AntjeSchmidt\/sharing-is-caring-hamburg-extension-1ef888104df3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">written version of the opening speech<\/a> by Antje Schmidt.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GLAMiAwards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2017 edition of the Awards has undergone a renovation in format, categories and presentation of proposals, now requesting a video to be included, on top of a <strong>stronger accent on innovation and accessibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excellent projects were presented that made it quite hard for the Jury to reach the final decisions. I recommend to explore the <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/glami-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">winners and finalists projects<\/a> that can be of inspiration for us all, as well as to access the whole <a href=\"http:\/\/mw17.mwconf.org\/glami-nominees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">list of all projects presented to the GLAMi Awards 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope to see restablished next year the popular vote for the Awards!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gallery One<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandart.org\/gallery-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gallery One<\/a>, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, deserves a specific spot in this post. There is not just your hands or eyes, it\u2019s your whole body that interacts with the artworks digitally screened. As simple as it may seem, the drawing of a given shape and instantly seeing an artwork that contains that shape you draw is very powerful. I believe we all came back full of ideas and energized to be part of such a thriving dedicated community around the world making our case for digital interpretation.
