
{"id":8942,"date":"2017-01-05T11:13:33","date_gmt":"2017-01-03T14:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/?p=8942"},"modified":"2020-05-21T15:27:37","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T15:27:37","slug":"what-we-discover-about-ramon-casas-with-infrared-reflectography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/en\/what-we-discover-about-ramon-casas-with-infrared-reflectography\/","title":{"rendered":"What we discover about Ramon Casas with infrared reflectography"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Mireia Campuzano, N\u00faria Pedragosa and Carme Ramells<\/h6>\n<p>For the 150th anniversary of the birth of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ramon_Casas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ramon Casas<\/a>, celebrated last year, here is what the studies carried out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/infrared-reflectography-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">infrared reflectography<\/a> reveal to us about different paintings by the artist conserved in the Museu Nacional d&#8217;Art de Catalunya.<\/p>\n<p>Reflectography shows that Casas sometimes approached the composition by making a first drawing in charcoal, and also that he usually constructed the forms with repeated brushstrokes that correct one another. This analysis technique, which is done using infrared radiation, moreover shows us that the underlying layers are done with vigorous, spontaneous and well-painted lines. This resource refers to the artist\u2019s way of working in his capacity as a draughtsman and poster artist.<\/p>\n<h3>Bold changes in the composition<\/h3>\n<p>Casas painted <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/colleccio\/bulls-dead-horses-or-lestiu-tota-cuca-viu\/ramon-casas\/214436-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Bulls (Dead Horses)<\/em> <\/a> <\/strong>(1886) when he was just 20 years old, and despite his youth we are surprised by the determined, precise, sharp appearance of the main motifs in the painting. IRR: Campuzano, Pedragosa, Ramells<\/h6>\n<p>Among the most noticeable ones there is the position of the picador and his shadow, the changed places of the bull and the dead horse, the interruption of the picador\u2019s spear, the shifting of the footrest, the variation in the diameter of the arena and the disappearance of a bullfighter in profile and another one facing us behind the barrier. IRR: Campuzano, Pedragosa, Ramells<\/h6>\n<h3>A mystery in the approach to the figures<\/h3>\n<p>One of the works from the early years of Casas\u2019s stay in Paris is <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/colleccio\/moulin-de-la-galette-interior\/ramon-casas\/214988-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interior of the Moulin de la Galette<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>(<em>c.<\/em>1890-1891). Of them, the figure in the foreground is surprising. By the facial features and the shoulder, it seems rather to be that of a man than a woman. Upon analysing the reflectogram, we detect that there has been a radical change in the approach to this figure and we are left in doubt as to whether Casas originally wanted to paint it or portray someone else. At first sight, this canvas looks like a perfectionist work with a meticulous finish. All these aspects are wholly in keeping with the style of painting in the open air, called <em>plein air<\/em>, so typical of the period. While the reflectograms are revealing a simple work in its execution and approach, Casas\u2019s skill makes it a beautiful painting full of nuances.<\/p>\n<h3>Connections between the painting and the drawing<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, we have studied a female portrait from his mature period, <strong><em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/colleccio\/portrait-dolors-vidal\/ramon-casas\/011387-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portrait of Dolors Vidal<\/a><\/u><\/em> <\/strong>(1911). The schematic way of expressing the trees in front of the church and the barely sketched boats are significant.
