Photographers in the collection of the Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Magda Juand\u00f3<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>As is well known, the famous question of the north American historian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linda_Nochlin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Linda Nochlin<\/a> <strong><em>\u201cWhy have there been no great women artists?<\/em>\u201c<\/strong>(1971) and her questioning of preconceived concepts by traditional historiography, paved the way for a slow recognition of women artists in general and women photographers in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Colita-Terenci-Moix-1970.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"368\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Colita-Terenci-Moix-1970.jpg\" alt=\"Colita, Terenci Moix, 1970. Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If we focus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/at-a-glance\/photography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Collection of Photography of the Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya<\/a> we can say, however, <strong>that it contains works carried out by photographers that are of exceptional beauty and quality<\/strong>, and that, despite all kinds difficulties that they had to overcome in general in order to learn and practise the <em>magic<\/em> of the discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The collection of photography of the museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 1996, after a long vindication of the Catalan photographic past, the Generalitat de Catalunya ordered the creation of the Photography Department of the National Museum. <strong>Today, the collection brings together more than 60,000 works<\/strong> &#8211; most of them period copies &#8211; which mainly reflect the <strong>history of Catalan photography<\/strong> and allow us to make a <strong>tour of the main artistic movements of the specialty: pictorialism, historical avant-garde, photographic reportage, realism, new avant-garde, neorealism, photojournalism or creative photography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/colleccio\/carmen-amaya-and-los-tarantos\/colita\/205220-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Carmen-Amaya-y-los-Tarantos-Colita-1.jpg\" alt=\"Colita, Carmen Amaya y los Tarantos, 1963\" class=\"wp-image-22171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Carmen-Amaya-y-los-Tarantos-Colita-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Carmen-Amaya-y-los-Tarantos-Colita-1-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Colita, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/colleccio\/carmen-amaya-and-los-tarantos\/colita\/205220-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carmen Amaya and los Tarantos<\/a><\/em>, 1963<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Professionals, artists and amateurs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first works that were incorporated in the department did so thanks to the budget that the Generalitat had allocated for the first time to the purchase of photographs during the 90s of the last century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This included the incorporation, among other things, of several examples of the activity of the renowned professional photographer Isabel Steva <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colita\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Colita<\/em><\/a> specifically eight of them. Close to the way in which the great Catalan Masters did, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francesc_Catal%C3%A0-Roca\" target=\"_blank\">Francesc Catal\u00e0-Roca<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oriol_Maspons_i_Casades\" target=\"_blank\">Oriol Maspons<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xavier_Miserachs\" target=\"_blank\">Xavier Miserachs<\/a>, of whom she was an assistant, <strong>Colita is today the best represented female photographer in the museum<\/strong>. Among her works \u2013one hundred and sixty six of them- we can highlight the wonderful <strong>portraits of characters from the world of flamenco and her work as a photojournalist and photographer of everyday life<\/strong>. Linked to the Barcelona School and established as a photographer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gauche_Divine\"><em>Gauche divine<\/em><\/a> and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nova_Can%C3%A7%C3%B3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nova can\u00e7\u00f3<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> her images remind us that for her, photography is a way of life, or in her own words: \u201c<strong>photography is an act of possession, you click and it steals a moment from your life<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/joana-biarn\u00e9s-rodatge-de-tuset-street.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/joana-biarn\u00e9s-rodatge-de-tuset-street.jpg\" alt=\"Joana Biarn\u00e9s, Filming on the film &quot;Tuset Street&quot;, 1967. Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same way as it has been for Colita, photography has been the <em>modus vivendi<\/em> of <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joana_Biarn%C3%A9s_i_Florensa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joana Biarn\u00e9s<\/a>, another great female professional photographer seen as the <strong>first graphic female reporter in Catalonia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biarn\u00e9s trained with her father, Joan Biarn\u00e9s, who was a sports photographer and from whom she learned that to make a good reportage it was necessary to capture <em>the photo<\/em>, that is to say, the image that defined the subject. Throughout her career Biarn\u00e9s <strong>has been a fantastic reporter, very curious, brave, daring<\/strong>, and she has managed to take <em>those photos<\/em> that no one but she was able to take, such <strong>as the ones she took of the Beatles in 1965 on the occasion of their concert in Barcelona<\/strong>, among many other reportages. Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above mentioned first budget that the Generalitat allocated to the acquisition of photographs also involved the incorporation of a series of images &#8211; eight of them, by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aleydis_Rispa\" target=\"_blank\">Aleydis Rispa<\/a>. Involved in the search for new forms of expression<strong>, Rispa is a reference in the so-called creative photography, which is postulated as another artistic medium in the field of contemporary art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Giorgia-Fiorio-Allenamento-della-squadra-Alessandria-Rugby.-Alessandria-2002.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"441\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Giorgia-Fiorio-Allenamento-della-squadra-Alessandria-Rugby.-Alessandria-2002.jpg\" alt=\"Giorgia Fiorio, Allenamento della squadra Alessandria Rugby. Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Four photographs that can be ascribed to the same trend are the ones by <a href=\"http:\/\/monicarosello.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00f2nicaRosell\u00f3<\/a>, whose joint work with Jordi Guillumet <strong>constructs a geometric universe of extreme delicacy and sensitivity<\/strong>. Deposit of Agrupaci\u00f3 Fotogr\u00e0fica de Catalunya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The deposit of the collection of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.afc.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\">L\u2019Agrupaci\u00f3 Fotogr\u00e0fica de Catalunya (AFC)<\/a> (The Photographic Association of Catalonia) carried out in 2003 has been the largest number of women photographers that the museum has received. The Association, founded in 1923, did not <strong>create a first course for women until 1956<\/strong>. This course counted on teachers of the level of Salvador Lluch and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julio_Ubi%C3%B1a\" target=\"_blank\">Julio Ubi\u00f1a<\/a> was the origin of the Feminine Group of the AFC, to which amateur photographers such as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosa_Sz%C3%BCcs_de_Tru%C3%B1%C3%B3\" target=\"_blank\">Rosa Sz\u00fccs<\/a>, among others, belonged, and of whom the museum possesses 195 works; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carme_Garcia_Padrosa\" target=\"_blank\">Carme Garcia de Ferrando<\/a>, 33; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.afc.cat\/visites-guiades-exposicio-gloria-salas\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gl\u00f2ria Salas<\/a>, 10 or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montserrat_Vidal_i_Barraquer\" target=\"_blank\">Montserrat Vidal Barraquer<\/a>, one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The works of these authors are based on a wide variety of themes &#8211; portraits, landscapes, costume scene, etc.,although they share the common feature that <strong>they knew how to overcome the pictorialism that was still practised in those years with the boosting of modern personal visions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1959, the first exhibition of the Women\u2019s Group was held at the AFC headquarters, a circumstance that <strong>encouraged the group to enter competitions in which they obtained recognitions and awards, some of them of international scope<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Carme-Garc\u00eda-de-Ferrando-Sense-t\u00edtol-no-datat.-MNACl.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"227\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Carme-Garc\u00eda-de-Ferrando-Sense-t\u00edtol-no-datat.-MNACl.jpg\" alt=\"Carme Garc\u00eda de Ferrando, Untitled, undated.
