{"id":21201,"date":"2020-06-04T11:21:13","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T11:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/?p=21201"},"modified":"2020-06-04T11:23:25","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T11:23:25","slug":"visiting-the-museu-nacional-dart-de-catalunya-for-real","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/en\/visiting-the-museu-nacional-dart-de-catalunya-for-real\/","title":{"rendered":"Visiting the Museu Nacional d\u2019Art de Catalunya, for real!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C\u00e9line M\u00fclich<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting museums in Barcelona and writing about them is my daily business, an ordinary activity that lately has been converted into something really special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>With the museums being closed for weeks, we had to get back to virtual experiences<\/strong>, such as consulting the web, online collections, podcasts, videos, social media or virtual visits to enjoy the beauties of the museums and their collections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Museu Nacional<\/a> did a great job in disseminating knowledge in a rigorous, but still fun way. I take you with me on a traditional, on site visit, complementary to the online experience, not in opposition!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I pick this particular museum because of its unique collection, but I\u2019ll come to that later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First of all: up the hill it goes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We start at Pla\u00e7a Espanya and there is no way you can miss the museum: the huge building is overlooking the entire area. The way up to seems to be steep, but no worry, there are also escalators that bring you up!&nbsp;And it comes even better: there will be a shuttle bus from Pla\u00e7a Espanya up to the museum!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum is located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/en\/the-palau-nacional-a-building-steeped-in-history-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Palau Nacional<\/strong><\/a>, a former pavilion of the World Exhibition of 1929\/30. In 1934 the Museu d&#8217;Art de Catalunya opened and showed Catalan art from the Middle Ages to the Baroque and in 1990 the Modern Art was added forming the museum as it is now. Photo: Jacqueline Glarner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before entering we enjoy the views over the city, maybe sit down for a while and soak up the atmosphere to somehow get ready for what we are about to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Museu Nacional is like all museums with big collections: you have to get your bearings, otherwise you\u2019re lost in art. <strong>There are definitely many things to see, so I pick my personal best-of tour.<\/strong> No judging, no ranking among artworks or artists!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medieval Romanesque Art: unique in the world<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Said the above, there is no doubt that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/at-a-glance\/mediaeval-romanesque-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the collection of Medieval Romanesque Art <\/a>from the 11-13<sup>th<\/sup> centuries is very special, so I do recommend you start with this one while you are still fresh (in mind and body).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mural paintings, taken off from the churches in the Pyrenees a hundred years ago (to save them from being sold and shipped abroad!), are set up with mock apses, so you get a real feeling how they have looked like in their original settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/colleccio\/apse-sant-pere-de-la-seu-durgell\/mestre-de-la-seu-durgell\/015867-000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mestre-de-la-Seu-d\u2019Urgell-Absis-de-Sant-Pere-de-La-Seu-dUrgell.jpg\" alt=\"Mestre de la Seu d\u2019Urgell, Absis de Sant Pere de La Seu d'Urgell, segon quart del segle XII\" class=\"wp-image-21190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mestre-de-la-Seu-d\u2019Urgell-Absis-de-Sant-Pere-de-La-Seu-dUrgell.jpg 330w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mestre-de-la-Seu-d\u2019Urgell-Absis-de-Sant-Pere-de-La-Seu-dUrgell-220x300.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/colleccio\/apse-sant-pere-de-la-seu-durgell\/mestre-de-la-seu-durgell\/015867-000\" target=\"_blank\">Apse from Sant Pere de La Seu d&#8217;Urgell<\/a>, Second quarter of 12th. See the art, listen to the silence and get transported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/catalogue\">a magic way 1000 years back in time<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modern Art: widen your art horizon <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is more to see in the museum, so let\u2019s continue to another highlight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/at-a-glance\/modern-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the collection of Modern Art<\/a> from the 19<sup>th<\/sup>-20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries, which includes works from the Catalan <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Nouveau\">Modernisme<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Noucentisme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Noucentisme<\/a> movements. Photo: Jacqueline Glarner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But these rooms are a fantastic way to go beyond and discover artists that are not so well known to a wider public, especially from outside Catalonia and Spain. Look out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/advanced-piece-search?title_1=ramon+casas&amp;title=&amp;field_piece_inventory_number_value=&amp;keys=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ramon Casas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/advanced-piece-search?title_1=santiago+rusi%C3%B1ol&amp;title=&amp;field_piece_inventory_number_value=&amp;keys=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Santiago Rusi\u00f1ol<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/advanced-piece-search?title_1=mari%C3%A0+fortuny&amp;title=&amp;field_piece_inventory_number_value=&amp;keys=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mari\u00e0 Fortuny<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/advanced-piece-search?title_1=juli+gonzalez&amp;title=&amp;field_piece_inventory_number_value=&amp;keys=&amp;field_piece_type_value_i18n%5B%5D=escultura\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sculptures of Juli Gonz\u00e1lez<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The display of this collection was remodeled six years ago to offer a more holistic approach to this period of art history combining for instance paintings, photography, poster art and the decorative arts. Just like the rooms of the Medieval Art, they form a beautiful coherence, so necessary to offer a museum visit to be remembered!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have a break, discover the building <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One notices right away that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/unique-venues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palau Nacional <\/a>was not built to host a museum. Photo: C\u00e9line M\u00fclich<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medieval Gothic: name the artists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we are refreshed, we continue and jump back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/at-a-glance\/mediaeval-gothic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Medieval Art, this time to the 13<sup>th<\/sup><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/at-a-glance\/mediaeval-gothic\">-15<sup>th<\/sup> centuries<\/a>. What\u2019s special for this period is that actually the first names related to Catalan art appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend watching out for the works of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jaume_Huguet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jaume Huguet<\/a>, my favorite one. In these rooms you can see the evolution of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/at-a-glance\/renaissance-and-baroque-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European art in the 16<sup>th<\/sup>-18<sup>th<\/sup> centuries<\/a>. Take it, don\u2019t leave it out! It\u2019s an extra 2\u20ac, but it\u2019s definitely worth it. Not only <strong>for the views you have over Barcelona<\/strong>, but, or specially, for the fact that <strong>you can actually walk half around the museum at this height<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, it feels like giving the museum a giant hug and discovering details you would not see from underneath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the views towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmirobcn.org\/en\/\">Fundaci\u00f3 Mir\u00f3<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcelonaturisme.com\/wv3\/en\/page\/396\/parc-de-montjuic.html\">Montju\u00efc parks<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museuolimpicbcn.cat\/en\/\">Olympic Stadium<\/a> and t<a href=\"https:\/\/museuciencies.cat\/en\/the-nat\/venues\/botanical-garden-of-barcelona\/historic-botanical-garden\/\">he old botanical garden<\/a> are so special that they should not be missed. A perfect way to end the visit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The visit of the future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I will certainly go back to the Museu Nacional once it will have opened again and I strongly believe that <strong>the core experience of visiting the museum will not change with new hygienic measures put in place<\/strong>. It is, however, a crucial factor to find the right balance between implementing necessary measures and still creating a welcoming atmosphere and hence, a positive user experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting the focus on this very experience will be, to my opinion, more important than ever. And this includes not only setting up interesting displays and exhibitions but <strong>informing well visitors what they can expect <\/strong>(ticketing, access, rooms that might be closed, etc.), so as to gain their trust before they head out to the museum.&nbsp;For example, we already know that now you will not be able to go up to the Rooftop terrace, until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It will be interesting to see how museum visits evolve in the future, how people act and how museums react<\/strong> (or should it be the other way round, with a proactive museum?).
