
{"id":16046,"date":"2019-05-09T11:09:25","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T11:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/?p=16046"},"modified":"2020-05-04T17:44:38","modified_gmt":"2020-05-04T17:44:38","slug":"museums-and-the-web-2019-a-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/en\/museums-and-the-web-2019-a-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"Museums and the web 2019: a recap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conxa Rod\u00e0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>This post is intended to offer a quick digest of a dense <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/\">Museums and the Web<\/a> 3-day conference in Boston, with literally hundreds presentations, papers, forums, how-to sessions, demos, exhibits, lightning talks, Q&amp;A sessions and conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the sake of clarification, I have divided the content into three main lines\/topics :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>audiences<\/li><li>collection<\/li><li>organisation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the three are interlinked and all have technology as the background and enhancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to look more closely at the MW19 content, you may skip the post and go directly to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museweb.net\/bibliography\/?by=2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"read the papers (opens in a new tab)\">read the papers<\/a>. It is encouraging to see that concepts such as digital inclusion, accessibility, understanding users\u2019 needs, visitor experience and social impact have not only come to maturity but we can already see great examples of them being put into practice. <strong>Interactive, participatory, multi-sensory and immersive experiences<\/strong> were presented, all aimed at offering the audience an enhanced range of possibilities to connect and interact with collections and stories. <\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lK_BOICBlk8\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>A Journey Inside Paintings and Calligraphy<\/em>&#8211; VR Art Exhibition at the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lK_BOICBlk8\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/lK_BOICBlk8<\/a>&nbsp; 02:16 min<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/humanrights.ca\/exhibition\/mandela-struggle-for-freedom\">Mandela: Struggle for Freedom,<\/a> by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, is a rich sensory experience of imagery, soundscape, digital media and objects that literally immerse visitors inside Mandela\u2019s cell. In a few minutes, 27 years of imprisonment are encapsulated to make an impact on visitors. The five-theme exhibition and a participatory <a href=\"https:\/\/postersforfreedom.ca\/\">poster creation<\/a> activity complete the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thinking of providing one mediator for your visitors? The <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/glami\/digital-platform-for-management-and-distribution-of-accessible-and-interactive-visit-solutions\/\">Digital platform<\/a> of the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts et d\u2019Arch\u00e9ologie Besan\u00e7on, France, is an excellent integrated solution for both external use and internal management, and it won one of the awards. It is intended as a highly accessible digital companion for visitors, with image recognition of the artworks and augmented reality (AR). It enables cloud-web-based management of tours, kiosks and digital labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unshuttered.org\/\">Getty Unshuttered<\/a> project, a multi-platform teen arts program on the subject of social justice, based on photography, has had a great <strong>participatory impact<\/strong>. Initially started with 23 young students from underprivileged communities, it involved thousands of teenagers who uploaded their photos on the set topics of perspective, colour, portrait, etc. It is  multiplatform designed: app, website, YouTube channel, Instagram, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/art\/exhibitions\/la_unshuttered\/\">exhibition in the museum<\/a>. It is a pity that the app is only accessible for iOS, but browsing the website, watching the videos and looking at the photos is a delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that analytics are key to providing insights, but do we know how to <strong>measure emotional experiences<\/strong>? The University of Leicester\u2019s paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/how-does-this-exhibition-make-you-feel-measuring-sensory-and-emotional-experience-of-in-gallery-digital-technology-with-gsr-devices\/\">How Does This Exhibition Make You Feel?, <\/a>provides a new evaluative framework for measuring emotion and feeling in-gallery. It is a most relevant aspect of UX because, \u201cThe way visitors experience museums is also a combination of sensory, aesthetic, intellectual, and social factors. Therefore, understanding the sensory experience in museums is crucial for a better understanding of the overall visiting experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/MWX_Immersive_Arcade.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/MWX_Immersive_Arcade-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"MWX Immersive Arcade\" class=\"wp-image-16051\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/MWX_Immersive_Arcade-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/MWX_Immersive_Arcade-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/MWX_Immersive_Arcade-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/MWX_Immersive_Arcade.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/mwx\/\" target=\"_blank\">MWX<\/a> Immersive Arcade. Photo: Conxa Rod\u00e0 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gamification<\/strong> also found its way into the conference. Two good examples are <a href=\"https:\/\/learning-resources.sciencemuseum.org.uk\/resources\/total-darkness\/\">Total Darkness<\/a>, an online game developed by the Science Museum Group from the UK, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/the-museum-of-me-exploring-and-exhibiting-identity-with-the-video-game-what-remains-of-edith-finch\/\">Museum of Me<\/a>, a game-based approach that \u201cnourishes youth hearts and minds by synthesizing creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, making, and contemporary narrative forms\u201d, an adaptation of an existing videogame to a museum environment. Attendees were able to walk through the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/mwx\/\" target=\"_blank\">MWX<\/a> Immersive Arcade that offered diverse game-based experiences to inspire new ideas for audience engagement and learning in museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were a great many substantial ideas about user experience. Here is a small selection of random <strong>UX quotations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cNeed to make sure user experience (UX) is consistent across the gallery and website and mobile\u201d, Illya Moskvin, Art Institute of Chicago<\/li><li>Mission of MIT Museum: \u201cmaking research accessible to all\u201d.&nbsp; As a consequence, \u201cUX was designed to make research faster and easier\u201d, David Nunez<\/li><li>Users expect more interaction with objects and real time editing\u201d, Neil Stimler<\/li><li>\u201cWeb content drives more than visits, it drives voice queries\u201d, Ariane French, American Museum of Natural History <\/li><li> \u201cA mixed qualitative and quantitative approach leads to a holistic understanding of users. Testing with a mix of visitors, members, scholars and remote users yields a broad canvas of perspectives\u201d, Elena Villaespesa, Pratt Institute and Madhav Tankha, MET<\/li><li>\u201cBe Artistic and Analytic\u201d, Hiroshi Ishii, MIT Media Lab<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The O-O-O Collection: Online Open, Oriented to use<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Publishing the collection online has been a first necessary step for museums \u2013 and may still be a challenge for many. But it is not enough if we want to be truly accessible. Two other data requirements play a crucial role here: 1. The data to be <strong>free and open for any use<\/strong>, reuse, remix and recreation, be it for personal, educational or commercial purposes; 2. The data to be <strong>oriented to use<\/strong>, to facilitate access and generation of knowledge, which means thinking not just from the curatorial perspective when tagging and structuring content, giving collections more accessibility and visibility, with a wide array of functionalities, enriching records with metadata that make collections truly searchable and findable. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontotext.com\/knowledgehub\/fundamentals\/linked-data-linked-open-data\/\">Linked Open Data<\/a> being the culmination of openness and accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/cma-thinker\/introducing-open-access-at-the-cma-for-the-benefit-of-all-the-people-forever-d3cd81964616\">Open Access<\/a> star of the year has been The Cleveland Museum of Art, with 30,000 high-resolution images released under Creative Commons 0 and metadata of more than 60,000 artworks. The process implied enriching metadata \u2013 35 fields for each object \u2013 and the redesign of their collection online search to make data easily available for all uses.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c9DG4XZSH98\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open Access at Cleveland Museum of Art: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/c9DG4XZSH98\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/c9DG4XZSH98<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Advocacy for <strong>opening online collections to participation<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/where-are-the-edit-and-upload-buttons-dynamic-futures-for-museum-collections-online\/\">Where Are The Edit and Upload Buttons? Dynamic Futures for Museum Collections Online<\/a> by Neal Stimler and Louise Rawlinson. The authors propose \u201cto make online collections part of an interconnected system that participates in the real-time creation, exchange and sharing of knowledge\u201d and offer a good list of examples of innovative online collections and of museum and heritage aggregators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For museums still sceptical about going on Wikipedia, I strongly recommend reading this paper: <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/museum-collections-on-wikipedia-opening-up-to-open-data-initiatives\/\">Museum Collections on Wikipedia: Opening Up to Open Data Initiatives<\/a>, by Elena Villaespesa and Trilce Navarrete. Among other things, it shows evidence that&nbsp; \u201cpainting images are used to illustrate a range of topics in Wikipedia including, for example, historical facts, political figures, cities, films, scientists, musical instruments, mythology, etc.\u201d. It is thus a great way to multiply the outreach of our artworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organisational change and challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For digital in museums to thrive, there is an urgent need for the transformation \u2013 evolution \u2013 of the way organizations work. Flattened hierarchies, flexibility, agile ways, organizational success metrics, open attitudes are key to advancing \u2013 or even surviving \u2013 in the digitally accelerated environment. Of the strongest aspects, two seem to me to be essential: <strong>internal cross-collaboration<\/strong> and <strong>training<\/strong> to acquire the expected\/required skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the presentation by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/walking-in-the-shoes-of-our-visitors-human-centered-design-and-organizational-change-at-the-isabella-stewart-gardner-museum\/\">Walking in the shoes of our visitors: Human-centered design and organizational change<\/a>, states: \u201cTo truly transform an organization\u2019s relationship with its visitors, museums must change themselves in the process\u201d. A <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/en\/visitor-journey-mapping-walking-in-our-visitors-shoes\/\">Visitor journey mapping<\/a> was the trigger for creating a set of visitor experience principles, changes in governance structure, the creation of a cross-departmental visitor experience working group, and insights into developing new visitor services. I strongly recommend reading the whole paper rich with concepts and mapping graphs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Visitor-Experiencie-Team.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Visitor-Experiencie-Team.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16054\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Visitor-Experiencie-Team.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Visitor-Experiencie-Team-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><figcaption> Visitor Experience cross-departmental team at <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/walking-in-the-shoes-of-our-visitors-human-centered-design-and-organizational-change-at-the-isabella-stewart-gardner-museum\/\">Isabella Steward Gardner Museum<\/a>, Michel Grohe <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategic decision of the Welcome Collection to turn to <strong>digital storytelling<\/strong> in order to reach audiences resulted in an internal transformation process. The excellent keynote, <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/digital-content-storytelling-and-journalism-a-genuine-museum-experience\/\">Digital Content, Storytelling and Journalism: A Genuine Museum Experience<\/a>, gives details of the creation of a web content team and how they worked through the museum: \u201cOur digital channels don&#8217;t just promote our museum and library, they <em>are<\/em> our museum and library\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another great example of internal collaboration and <strong>systems integration<\/strong> was shared by the Arts Institute of Chicago: <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/paper\/building-a-data-hub-microservices-apis-and-system-integration-at-the-art-institute-of-chicago\/\">Building a Data Hub: Microservices, APIs, and System Integration<\/a>. For all those still struggling with data fragmentation and the diversity of IT systems, perhaps inconsistent and disconnected, this will show the process and the benefits as well as the difficulties to overcome for building an integrated system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, there was a certain air of a <strong>loss of optimism<\/strong>, disillusionment and tiredness in several conversations due to the permanent effort needed to promote digital, innovation, leadership involvement, and also due to the lack of resources, the precarious nature of jobs, conservationism, risk-aversion, opposition, etc. I recommend reading the juicy recap by Koven Smith of a <a href=\"https:\/\/kovenjsmith.com\/post\/2019-04-06-on-bravery\/\">#MW19 conversation on bravery &amp; risk-taking<\/a><strong>.<\/strong>I would like to stress that although there is still a lot of (hard) work to do, a great deal has already been achieved in museums worldwide, and time is on the side of this evolution: the future is awaiting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The GLAMi Awards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I am honoured to have been a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mw19.mwconf.org\/committees\/\">Jury panel<\/a> for several years now.
