To discuss it and to get to know good initiatives all around the world and here in Catalonia, the 3rd Conference of the <a href=\"http:\/\/observatoripublics.icrpc.cat\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Observatory of Audiences of Cultural Heritage of Catalonia<\/a>, took place on 16th October in the Macba\u00a0(Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/observatoripublics.icrpc.cat\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conference<\/a> allowed methodologies to be presented for the evaluation of quality: on the one hand, for the improvement of the management of museums, and on the other hand, to make visible an important part of the work that is not usually reflected by the traditional preponderance of quantitative data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Observatori-de-p\u00fablics.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14585\" title=\"Evaluating quality in museums\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Observatori-de-p\u00fablics.jpg\" alt=\"Evaluating quality in museums\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Observatori-de-p\u00fablics.jpg 1312w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Observatori-de-p\u00fablics-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Observatori-de-p\u00fablics-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Observatori-de-p\u00fablics-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artscouncil.org.uk\/quality-metrics\/quality-metrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Quality Metrics<\/em><\/a> model presented by Carl Stevens, from the <em>Arts Council of England<\/em>, measures the quality of the English cultural entities. One of the cornerstones of this model is the evaluation of the opinion that visitors, colleagues and people from the organisation itself have of a cultural activity or exhibition.\u00a0 The statements about which the interviewees make of their degree of agreement or disagreement are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Presentation: it was well produced and presented<\/li>\n<li>Distinctiveness: it was different from things I\u2019ve experienced before.<\/li>\n<li>Rigour: it was well thought-through and put together.<\/li>\n<li>Relevance: it had something to say about the world in which we live.<\/li>\n<li>Captivation: it was absorbing and held my attention.<\/li>\n<li>Challenge: it was thought-provoking<\/li>\n<li>Enthusiasm: I would come to something like this again.<\/li>\n<li>Local impact: it\u2019s important that it&#8217;s happening here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Together with the evaluation of experts, it also includes the following statements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Concept: it was an interesting idea.<\/li>\n<li>Risk: the artists\/curators really challenged themselves with this work.<\/li>\n<li>Originality: it is revolutionary, innovative.<\/li>\n<li>Excellence: it is one of the best examples of its type that I have seen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_CarlStevens.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14592\" title=\"Conference: Evaluating quality in museums\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_CarlStevens.jpg\" alt=\"Conference: Evaluating quality in museums\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_CarlStevens.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_CarlStevens-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_CarlStevens-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_CarlStevens-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to highlight the fact that all the organisations that receive funding from the Arts Council have to apply these quality metrics.<\/p>\n<p>The step <strong>from the satisfaction of the audiences to engagement <\/strong>was the topic of the talk given by Gerri Morris, director of the consultancy <a href=\"https:\/\/mhminsight.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Morris Hargreaves McIntyre<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>Based on the analysis of data, a classification model was elaborated of the motivations for visiting a museum: <strong>social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual<\/strong>. Also a hierarchy was identified of four visitor models according to how they create meaning in an exhibition: browsers, followers, searchers and researchers. One of the techniques that they propose to evaluate the impact on a visitor is their movement between categories from the time they enter the museum to the moment they leave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_GerriMorris.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14593\" title=\"Talk by Gerri Morris\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_GerriMorris.jpg\" alt=\"Talk by Gerri Morris\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_GerriMorris.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_GerriMorris-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_GerriMorris-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.museunacional.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jornada-P\u00fablics_GerriMorris-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other topics covered: the <strong>propensity to recommend<\/strong> as an indicator of the satisfaction of the visitors, presented by Jes\u00fas M\u00aa Bueno, director of <em>Radical Customer Experience<\/em>; <strong>Quality certifications<\/strong> in the context of improving cultural heritage, by Matilde Gonz\u00e1lez, consultant in management of cultural resources and diffusion of heritage, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diba.cat\/web\/benestar\/cercles-de-comparacio-intermunicipals-de-serveis-socials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Circles of inter-municipal comparison<\/strong><\/a> as a tool in the service of the Network of Local Museums of Barcelona, given by\u00a0 Ramon Dordal and Aur\u00e8lia Cabot, of the <em>Diputaci\u00f3 de Barcelona<\/em> (Barcelona Provincial Council).<\/p>\n<p>The Conference closed with a round table on quality management in the museums of Catalonia, in which several directors and heads of audiences of museums and administrations shared how they work on the quality of the activities of their centres.<\/p>\n<p>Through the hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/3jornadaOPPCC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#3jornadaOPPCC<\/a>\u00a0you can access the tweets and images sent throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>In its mission of supporting the museums and other heritage facilities of Catalonia in the knowledge of its visitors and users to create, maintain and develop new audiences and improve the social use of cultural heritage, the <em>Observatori dels P\u00fablics del Patrimoni Cultural de Catalunya<\/em>, dedicates an <a href=\"http:\/\/observatoripublics.icrpc.cat\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annual conference to the topic of audiences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>If you work in a museum, what indicators do you think are relevant to measure the quality of your centres?
